First silver skills — what beginning silversmithing actually teaches
Two student rings — a bezel-set stone and a hollow dome — with sawn silver and riveted copper. All first-year bench work.
Silversmithing is where jewellery making stops being craft and starts being
engineering you can wear. The first skills sound humble and feel enormous,
because each becomes a permanent tool in your hands.

The five first skills
- Saw-piercing — cutting your design from silver sheet with a jeweller's
saw. Blade tension and turning control are the first technique you drill. - Filing and finishing — the unglamorous skill that separates amateur
from professional. Files, grits, patience. - Annealing — heating silver to soften it between working stages. Fire
confidence starts here. - Soldering — joining silver permanently. The moment your first joint
flows clean, you are hooked for life. - Basic stone setting — a bezel-set cabochon is the classic first
setting: measure, form, seat, push the metal over the stone.
The pieces in the photo at the top of this page — the bezel ring, the hollow
dome ring, the sawn panel, the riveted copper — are exactly what those five
skills produce in a first course.
Why silver is the right teacher
Silver is precious enough to be real jewellery, forgiving enough to correct
mistakes, and affordable enough that mistakes stay lessons. Everything
transfers to gold and other metals later.
Where this happens in Singapore
JDMIS's precious metal arts track starts with

Questions people actually ask
Is silversmithing safe for complete beginners?
Yes — torch work is taught from first principles with supervision, and foundation courses assume zero bench experience. You learn heat behaviour before you are ever alone with a flame.
How much does silver cost to work with?
Far less than gold — which is exactly why it is the teaching metal. Mistakes are lessons, not losses. Course fees include studio silver for exercises.
Can I set real gemstones as a beginner?
Yes — a bezel-set cabochon is the classic first setting, and it is taught within the first courses of the metal arts ladder.
What students say
“I am using the skills in my everyday life and my spare time has become very productive.”
— Shirley M. (Philippines) · published student feedback
“Attended the courses here and it's worth way more than what you have to pay for. The instructors are all super approachable and welcoming everytime they see you. The tools needed are provided and you get to bring home the crafts that you make during the class. Even the class schedules are pretty flexible. I enjoyed myself here a lot and will definitely sign up for more classes.”
