Metal clay for beginners — silver in a putty's clothing
Textured metal work — clay techniques open metal to non-bench hands.
Metal clay is silver (or copper/bronze) powder in an organic binder —
handles like polymer clay, fires into solid metal. Textured jewellery
without sawing or soldering.
The flow
Roll → texture (stamps, leaves, lace) → dry → refine → fire (torch or kiln;
the binder burns away, particles sinter) → polish. Shrinkage of 8-15% is
part of the maths.
Strengths
Organic texture, quick results, no torch skills for simple pieces, home-
friendly for small work. Perfect for nature-cast textures and one-off gifts.
Honest limits
Cost per gram beats sheet silver; big structural pieces still want the
bench. The two skills complement — clay for texture, bench for structure.
