Filing and finishing — the skill that separates handmade from homemade

Files and emery — finishing is where a piece acquires its value.

Nobody falls in love with filing. Every jeweller respects it — because
finishing IS the quality.

Files: shape to the job

Needle files come in profiles — flat, half-round, round, triangular, knife.
The trick is matching profile to contour: half-round for inside curves,
knife for tight corners, flat for faces.

The grit ladder

Emery progression is non-negotiable: each grit removes the scratches of the
one before. Skipping a stage = discovering deep scratches at final polish,
when the only fix is going back. Wet-and-dry papers 400 → 800 → 1200 on
metal, then polishing compound on a muslin wheel.

The eye trick

Work under raking light — a lamp held low, light skimming across the surface
— and every hidden scratch shows up. Finish to the raking light, not to hope.

The patience curve

Your first piece: 40% of bench time. By your tenth: 25%, and you stop
resenting it. The
Foundation Metalwork course
builds the habit with instructor standards — professional finishing is
literally the assessment. See also first silver skills.
